Steven Gerrard set for revealing interview as Rangers next manager favourite to break five month silence

Steven Gerrard is set to give a rare extended media appearance amid firm links with the vacant post at Rangers.

The Liverpool legend and former Ibrox boss has generally kept a low profile in the UK since heading to Saudi Arabia to manage Al-Ettifaq in 2023.

He’s popped up with occasional punditry appearances but has remained tight-lipped on his future – not since April has he spoken about a possible return to management when he played down his chances of an immediate return to work.

In the summer, we understand Gerrard was firmly considered for a return to Rangers but his family, settled in Bahrain, didn’t want to return to the UK at that time.

But as Russell Martin leaves the hotseat empty, Gerrard is set to give a rare interview on Rio Ferdinand’s ‘Rio Meets’ podcast – where his future is highly likely to be on the agenda.

The episode airs at 4pm UK time on Tuesday, October 7 on the Manchester United legend’s YouTube channel.

Recent interviews with Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen have lasted more than an hour so it’s set to be the most in-depth interview Gerrard has given since April when he appeared on That Peter Crouch Podcast.

When Ferdinand shared a tweet promoting the show – incidentally the day after the Rangers job became available – the replies were filled with Ibrox punters demanding he asks about a potential return to the club.

Whether or not he’ll speak directly about Rangers remains to be seen.

Gerrard’s last outspoken address on his future came on Peter Crouch’s podcast in April when he said he had no immediate plans to get back in the saddle.

But five months on that all might have changed. He said then: “I don’t want to be back in work, not at the moment. I’ve just come out, so I am happy waking up, being free, doing the family stuff and being free from the stress.
