The Steelers will make an out of character move leading up to their August 17 preseason matchup against Buffalo, with the two teams scheduling an August 15 joint practice at Acrisure Stadium ahead of the game.

The practice will be held from 2-4 p.m., although per Steelers.com, it will be closed to the public.

The move is unusual Steelers, who haven’t held a practice with another team since 2016, when they paired with the Detroit Lions.

The merits of joint practices have been debated by NFL teams for some time, as evidenced by the Steelers’ recent lack of them. One one hand, they give organizations a better chance to see how their rosters hold up against another NFL team — essentially an extra preseason game — but they also can result in more training camp fights, possible playbook secrets leaking, and as always, a chance of injury.

The Steelers will hold their first open to the public practice on July 25 at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe.
