The Parkhead manager admits he’s delighted at the progress of his unit. Celtic have made a power-packed start to the campaign with an unblemished record and some sparkling attacking play. Rodgers outlined his plans to the squad when he first returned to the club at the beginning of last season.

“That vision was here from the first day I walked in. However players need to get accustomed to how you work, feel comfortable and have clarity with the messages. You then have to have talented players available to execute it. But I think over the course of the second-part of last season, through pre-season until now, we are seeing a real clarity in how we work, a real unified team and squad of players and the end result in your performance level on the pitch.
“But, of course, my job is to drive for even more and that’s what we’ll continue to do, but it’s also what this group is likeThere’s still players with a lot to learn and develop and each day they are showing they can do that. But there’s still elements we can be better in. I’d still like us to be more ruthless, if I’m honest.
“I think having had that period of time now working with the team in just over a year, there is probably a greater trust between both really. Just in relation to we have formed those relationships and we understand where we are all at. The guys understand how I manage and coach and how I develop. They have a comfort with that, but also know the demands and expectations that we put on players and those of the club.

“But I think over the course of the last year, we have been able to cultivate that even more and rehearse more situations, which puts us in a really, really good place and now we have to integrate the new players into that and allow them to build these relationships, also.”
Celtic entered the international break a sweeping victory over Rangers and Rodgers was pleased to see progression from the previous meeting of the teams. Speaking to Celtic TV, he said: “That is always my thinking for our development and improvement as a team.
“So when I look back to the Scottish Cup Final, even though it was the back end of the season, you can still look at it next time and see have you improved. I think that was clear for me we had done that. That first 10 minutes was also a little bit of figuring it out. The players have become very, very astute in the game in that. Once we had that moment [Kyogo offside goal] when we played through it, okay we didn’t get it, but that allowed to us then to know: Right okay, this is now what we’re playing against. Then we could go through the levels.”
Daizen Maeda, Kyogo Furuhashi and Callum McGregor scored the goals. The boss said: “His [Maeda] big superpower is his running and his athleticism and his ability to press. It brings an incredible integrity to the team, but he’s not on his own. Everyone has to do it. He sets a great benchmark, there’s not many can do it like him and with the ball he’s getting into a nice habit of scoring goals. But you can only do that by getting into the right areas. Kyogo is 100 percent in everything he does. When he presses, he’s all in and he really frightens defenders and goalkeepers with that speed of his press.

“But in order to do that, you have to be cute, you have to be clever, you have to be aware, so from a tactical perspective, he’s so, so good. Again, like Daizen, 100 per cent for the team. You saw the recovery run [against Rangers] he made. There’s midfield players wouldn’t make that run, from the edge of the box and tracked the game all the way back and put his body on the line for the team.
“Seeing that level of commitment, it’s a great tonic for everyone else in the team. On the offensive side, I’ve really been pleased with his development. I’ve spoken before about him playing the space rather than the position and, hopefully, you can see a lot more of that coming through now. His overall game is improving and so pleasing to see.
“Callum follows in a long line of great captains at this club, that not only are top players, but they operate with a huge humility and a real value of what Celtic is all about. He’s a really inspiring captain. He’s really selfless. His thoughts are for the club, his team and his team-mates. And that example, Luke [McCowan] coming into game and him bringing him that comfort letting him know that I’m here with you, we are together. I think those comforting words of support when he came onto the pitch really typifies Callum’s selfless way.”
