West Ham United remain “very interested” in Tammy Abraham with Roma looking to sell the striker this summer, according to Foot Mercato.

 

The French outlet reported on 23 August that Roma have been keen to part ways with the 26-year-old England forward for the entire summer transfer window, as his salary “weighs heavily” on their finances.

Abraham remains a target for the Irons, who are interested in securing a return to the Premier League for the striker after AC Milan and Juventus made initial enquiries over his availability.

 

Having spent £34.8million to sign him from Chelsea in 2021, Roma’s new sports management team are hopeful of recouping as much of that fee as possible, despite Abraham’s injury issues last season.

While Abraham has scored goals at almost every single club he’s been at in his career, the reduction of both his game-time and output at the Stadio Olimpico should be a cause for concern in East London.

The 26-year-old went from 27 goals in his first campaign at Roma – a rate better than one every other game – to just nine in 54 matches the following season, which is an alarming drop at the same level.

Furthermore, with Roma looking to recoup the bulk of the £34.8m fee they paid to Chelsea three years ago, spending north of £27m on another new striker would leave a crowded field at the London Stadium [Calcio Mercato, 5 August].

 

That’s because the Hammers have already shelled out exactly that amount to sign 31-year-old Niclas Fullkrug from Borussia Dortmund this summer, and he’s expected to be a first-choice pick going forward.

With fellow veterans Michail Antonio and Danny Ings still on the books, adding Abraham at significant expense may be a step too far for the Irons, despite how much younger he is than their existing options.
