Ianis Hagi told not to jump ship and to star at Rangers, for now
Links to Fenerbahce were dismissed with the only concrete interest coming from Rapid Bucharest, who are working hard to persuade the playmaker to return home.
According to Romanian news outlet GSP, Gheorghe Hagi isn’t convinced and believes his son should hold out for a move abroad.
Rapid president Veriol Moldovan is determined to get his man though:
“Ianis Hagi is a high value player that I think every club wants.
“We’ll see. We have some discussions, we’ll see how they go. I hope he’ll be interested in coming to Rapid.
“That’s the most important thing.”
Rapid shareholder Dan Sucu made it clear that Hagi is their number one target after selling Albion Rrahmani:
“We really want him,” he said when asked about the prospect of signing Rangers former number seven.
Why Hagi could yet be seen in Rangers colours again
Still under contract until 2026, Ianis Hagi, who cost Rangers £3m, is well within his rights not to move if there isn’t an attractive offer for him.
There were reports that he was keen to stay and work his way into Clement’s plans and, with Tom Lawrence as the only fit number 10, it seemed to make sense.
The Gers boss has spoken before about having players lined up who have agreed to join the cluband he must have someone special lined up to keep ignoring Hagi.
The 39-times capped international isn’t perfect, however, there isn’t much of a debate as to whether or not he is an upgrade on the current members of the squad.
He also has the versatility needed to cover anywhere behind the striker or even deeper as a number eight.
As a hardworking, technically gifted player who is positive in terms of how he goes about his business, it is a surprise to see Clement not even want to have a look at him in training or in games.
At the moment, the only offer on the table that we know of is from Rapid Bucharest.
Leaving Rangers is usually a step back, but given Hagi’s dreams of playing in La Liga or one of the top five leagues, it would be strange to see him take such a step back at this stage of his career.
With the days running out until deadline day, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Ianis Hagi back in a Rangers shirt on the other side when the window shuts.
