Ian Rapoport: Steelers’ Russell Wilson Now Must Control Situation Before Justin Fields Steals His Spot

The Pittsburgh Steelers began training camp in Latrobe, PA on Thursday, but fans were surprised to see new quarterback Russell Wilson not participating in drills. Wilson did not even have his helmet with him.

Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin addressed the media and explained that Wilson woke up with calf soreness, leading the team to decide against having him practice. Tomlin mentioned that Wilson was eager to participate, but the coaching staff opted to rest him as a precaution.

This situation provided an opportunity for another highly discussed quarterback, Justin Fields. The offseason has seen much speculation about Wilson being the frontrunner for the starting position and what that means for Fields.

While it seems clear that Wilson is expected to be the starter, Fields still has a chance to compete for the role. NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that there are no serious concerns about Wilson’s injury, but there is some uncertainty about the security of his starting position.

“He’s considered day-to-day, could practice very soon. Health-wise, this is no issue at all. But that’s not really what we’re talking about here. Russell Wilson needs to be careful. If he can in any way control this, he needs to be careful because this really is how it happens, right? I mean, Justin Fields went out there today, sounds like he was pretty impressive. There’s a throw to Van Jefferson that everyone’s been talking about. And Justin Fields as a thrower, as an athlete, there’s a lot of really impressive things that he can do.”

The offseason has been dominated by discussions about Wilson and Fields. Some experts argue that Wilson should unquestionably be the starter, while others believe Fields has the talent to take the job. When the Steelers traded for Fields, they made it clear that they wanted him to learn from Wilson.

Rapoport suggests that if Wilson has any say in the matter—something Tomlin admitted he didn’t have regarding practice—he needs to return to the field quickly. In the NFL, injuries are common and can create opportunities for other players to claim your spot. Fields impressed fans today with several throws including one to Van Jefferson that has been trending.

“Russell Wilson has to be careful,” Rapoport said. “Because you open the door just a little bit and you let Mike Tomlin and these Steelers offensive coaches think, ‘Wow, Justin Fields can show us a little bit.’ That’s how it happens and that’s how momentum builds. So obviously, Russell Wilson is doing what he can to get out there, but it certainly is important that he does so at a very fast pace.”

The notion that Wilson’s job is seriously at risk right now seems unlikely. However, Fields’ performance Thursday has garnered significant attention to some. Many Steelers analysts reported that he looked promising.

While it’s challenging to make definitive judgments this early in training camp, Fields clearly made an impression.

Steelers QB Battle Starting To Gain Serious Momentum

It will be interesting to see when Wilson returns to the field, as the quarterback competition in Pittsburgh could intensify. The Steelers find themselves with a good problem: both Wilson and Fields are eager to prove they still belong in the league.

This competition will elevate their performance, with one of them emerging as the starter. Steelers fans are excited, believing that the team is just an upgrade at quarterback away from being true contenders.

Giants HC announces massive injury update on QB Daniel Jones

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll told reporters on Wednesday that quarterback Daniel Jones was good to go for 11-on-11 drills as he works his way back from last season’s torn ACL. ESPN’s Jordan Raanan reported that Daboll said that the team will monitor how Jones feels to decide how they continue with his return to action. The Duke product is just eight months removed from ACL surgery after going down with the injury in Week 9 against the Las Vegas Raiders. In late May, Jones labeled himself as ready to go for Week 1 of the regular season. Then in mid-June, he told media members that he thinks he’ll regain his full mobility before September. Jones had a career-best campaign in 2022 when he produced 22 total touchdowns (seven rushing) against just five interceptions and posted a career-high 92.5 passer rating. He signed a four-year, $160M contract extension in March 2023 but struggled mightily last season. The 2019 first-round pick missed Weeks 6, 7 and 8 due to a neck injury and then suffered his season-ending ACL injury during his return to action in Week 9. Jones finished his fifth season with a career-high 67.5 completion percentage but just 909 passing yards, two touchdowns, six interceptions and a career-worst 70.5 passer rating.

Watch: Mets humble disrespectful Braves outfielder in walk-off win

The scene at Citi Field in Queens, N.Y. got spicy late into Thursday’s game between the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets. The Mets-Braves contest went into extra innings with the score tied 2-2. Braves outfielder Ramon Laureano was serving as the club’s ghost runner in the top of the 10th. After shortstop Orlando Arcia moved Laureano to third on a sacrifice bunt, Atlanta tried to double down on the bunt with a suicide squeeze attempt on the very next pitch. The Mets read the Braves’ plans perfectly, though. Mets reliever Phil Maton pitched out to catcher Francisco Alvarez, who had Laureano dead to rights in between third and home. Rather than go down peacefully, Laureano ended up lowering his shoulder and ramming into Alvarez. The Mets catcher took exception. Laureano looked more like a running back trying to break a tackle than a baserunner attempting to elude a tag. The Braves outfielder’s inability to slow down came back to haunt him a half-inning later. With two outs and two runners on base, Mets infielder Jeff McNeil sliced an 87-mph curveball down the right field line. Laureano’s momentum carried him past the ball and the Mets walked off with a 3-2 win. The baseball gods have seemingly smiled upon Alvarez and the Mets of late. The team has won its last four games, including back-to-back against the rival New York Yankees.

Which state has the most Olympians in the 2024 Paris Games?

The 2024 Paris Olympics are officially under way Friday with the United States, again, aiming to top the medal count, as it has in the previous seven Summer Games. The U.S. will have nearly 600 athletes competing in the Olympics and Paralympic Games, with California the most-represented state with 142 athletes, according to Team USA. Florida (46), Texas (42), Illinois (39) and Pennsylvania (35) round out the top five best-represented states. Thirteen states have 20 or more athletes represented (North Dakota and Wyoming are the only states not represented). Athletes’ hometowns are likely to change in their journey to be an Olympian, however. According to NBC, only one-third of this year’s Team USA still live in the town where they grew up. Training is rigorous and moves typically revolve around the best training facilities or opportunities for athletes. There’s also a collegiate flair to the Games. According to the NCAA, more than 1,000 current, former and incoming NCAA student-athletes will compete in Paris. The United States has nearly 400 on its roster. Stanford (54) and USC (52) are the best represented universities worldwide. Michigan (41), California (39) and Florida (39) round out the top five. The Big Ten is the most represented conference with 298 athletes, besting the SEC’s 264. The 2024 Paris Olympics will end on Aug. 11. The Paralympics, also in Paris, are Aug. 28-Sept. 8.

Warriors reportedly ‘firmly in the driver’s seat’ in trade race for All-Star forward

The Golden State Warriors are still hot in hot pursuit for Utah Jazz star Lauri Markkanen. The Dubs have identified their target and they are determined to land their man. Their chase for the All-Star forward, however, has become a bit complicated. At least one team appears to be in the race for Markkanen as well, with the San Antonio Spurs reportedly registering interest in the 27-year-old. Golden State Warriors Leading Chase for Lauri Markkanen The good news for the Warriors, however, is that they seem to be in pole position in the race for Markkanen’s services. Spurs insider Tim Montemayor recently reported that while San Antonio is willing to up their ante for Utah’s prized star, the Warriors remain the favorites to land Markkanen. “The San Antonio Spurs are willing to put in a third first-round pick and you can tell that they are seeing that they have to come with a sense of urgency to get this deal done,” Montemayor said (h/t Caleb Gebrewold of The Dunk Central). “I’m telling you the Golden State Warriors, from what I was told yesterday, are firmly in the drivers seat to make this trade happen. There is no sense of urgency to make that deal happen now, today. The Jazz are going to drag this out as long as they can.” The fact that the Jazz have continued to hold out up until this point in the offseason indicates their hesitation to part ways with Markkanen. They aren’t closing the door on a potential blockbuster trade, but you can be sure that they are demanding a major haul to even consider trading Markkanen away. At this point, it appears that it’s a matter of who’s going to budge first.
