That message failed to sink in and Gerrard opted to take his toolbox back south to Aston Villa, leaving Ange Postecoglou’s new-look Celtic to hammer first Gio van Bronckhorst and then Michael Beale into the derby turf. But even after moving to Villa, he’d still left the club in a really good place.

“It was all set up for the next manager to come in and take it on. But three years on, it now feels like the squad is in a worse state than before Steven took over. It definitely is. They managers who followed him have obviously spent a few quid since then. But they’ve not spent it wisely. I remember the interview Gerrard gave the day we lifted the trophy at Ibrox. “That was Steven’s character. He didn’t just want to sit still. He wanted to keep evolving the team. His mentality is that nothing’s ever perfect, so keep striving for better. “The trouble is that it was only wee things they had to fix back then. Now it’s major things. They’ve allowed those wee holes to build up, build up, build up. Phil has come in trying to repair it and he’s been told he’s probably getting X amount to spend because the previous managers before him have overspent. So I feel for him because he’s trying to fill holes in the squad without the same funds other managers have had. The only way he can fix it is with time and money – but as we all know, you don’t get long at Rangers.”
Ten days have passed since Rangers were swept aside by a bruising 3-0 beating at Parkhead but the pain of that opening derby loss continues to sting. Clement insists there’s no gulf between the teams – but Stewart can’t ignore the harsh truth.
“They started OK at Parkhead but it was a tough watch to be honest,” he admitted. You can’t hide away from the fact there’s a gap between the teams. Everyone can see it with their own eyes. Rangers just look like they’re going to concede every time teams get into their box. I can’t see them keeping many clean sheets this season.”
The blame game started as soon as the Gers team-bus returned back to Ibrox – with skipper James Tavernier taking the brunt of the fan fury. Speculation is rife that the right-back may be about to escape the Glasgow goldfish bowl, with a move to Turkey rumoured ahead of the SuperLig’s transfer deadline on Friday. But Stewart reckons it’s not a transfer but a testimonial Rangers should be lining up for the Englishman.

He said: “Tav’s an ex-teammate of mine, so I know for a fact what he does every day for that football club. Obviously he’ll be hurting like all us fans. I just think the stick he gets is mad. I’ve said it a million times, you’ll not realise his importance until he’s gone. People have other opinions. They say he’s only won three trophies and all that. But for me, I think he deserves a lot of respect.
I can’t see him leaving. It doesn’t make sense for Rangers to sell him. They don’t have anyone to cover him for starters because they still need Dujon Sterling in midfield. Instead of selling him they should be talking about giving him a testimonial. He’ll have been with the club for a decade if he makes it to next summer so of course he deserves to be honoured. I’ve heard people question him as captain – but there are different ways to be a leader.
“He’s never injured, so that means he’s living right, doing all he can to be ready to play. OK, he has the odd poor game or a defensive lapse. But if Tav was perfect every game he wouldn’t be at Rangers, he’d be playing for a top club in the Premier League.”
