The wait to play again after their Bournemouth meltdown is almost over for Everton. Their next game could well be a case of being tossed out of the frying pan and into the fire though.
The Blues will head to Aston Villa in search of their first points of the new Premier League season. Heavy defeats at home to Brighton & Hove Albion and away to Tottenham Hotspur were followed up by the staggering 3-2 defeat to the Cherries at Goodison Park.

At Villa Park a big challenge awaits. Unai Emery’s side finished in the top four last term and have begun the new year well, with two wins from three games. They have also been boosted by the signing of Amadou Onana from Everton, who has scored twice in his first two games for the club.

Everton were hammered 4-0 by Villa in the corresponding fixture last season, although the Blues did prevail 2-1 at the same venue in the League Cup. Manager Sean Dyche is in desperate need of a performance more akin to the latter than the former.

The Everton boss does have a fresh fitness issue to negotiate though. Club captain Seamus Coleman was forced off when playing for the Republic of Ireland against England over the weekend, meaning he is a major doubt for the fixture.
Coleman missed his country’s follow-up game against Greece and has returned to Everton for treatment. As of yet, the severity of the problem has not been revealed, with Dyche expected to provide an update on Thursday at his pre-match press conference.
Supporters will be hopeful of a more positive update on the fitness of Jarrad Branthwaite and Nathan Patterson.

Before the international break Dyche was cautious over the prospects of both players being involved in any behind-closed-doors games in an attempt to build fitness. Branthwaite, who was a transfer target for Manchester United throughout the summer window, has been a huge miss in the early weeks of the campaign.
He is yet to feature this season because of what has been described as a ‘minor groin issue’. Patterson has not featured since the 6-0 loss to Chelsea in April due to a hamstring problem.

Everton will definitely be without two of their forward options. Armando Broja only joined the club on loan on transfer deadline day and is expected to be out of action until October. Youssef Chermiti is also sidelined after having surgery on a foot problem he picked up in pre-season.
