St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson says it would be a “huge loss” if vice-chairman Jim Gillespie left for Rangers.

As reported by the Glasgow Times [23 August], Robinson has expressed his concern that Gillespie will take the CEO role at Ibrox vacated by James Bisgrove.

The Buddies boss admits Gillespie is a “driving force” behind the much-improved operations in Paisley.

Robinson said: “He’s certainly been brilliant for me. He’s been a huge driving force in the club in terms of its mentality. We’ve been thinking like a Championship club, now we’re thinking like a European club.

“We push everything to the limit and Jim is a massive driver of that. I hope the stories aren’t true but if they are, he’d be a huge loss.”

Rangers looking to replace James Bisgrove

Following Bisgrove’s summer move to Saudi Arabian club Al-Qadsiah, Rangers are on the lookout for a new figure to head up their business operations.

Reports last week detailed that the Gers had targeted Gillespie to replace Bisgrove [Scottish Sun, 17 August], but it appears the proposed appointment is not yet as certain as it initially seemed.

It is considered that Gillespie would naturally be interested in the role which would appear a lot more glamorous from the outside, but would take on a different edge of responsibility at a club where events off the pitch have been crying out for stability.

Rangers chairman John Bennett

Rangers chairman John Bennett

With John Bennett still very much an admirer of the St Mirren director, discussions have already taken place in the media over the primary tasks Gillespie would have to tackle should he make the move to Ibrox.

David Edgar argues that keeping the board out of football matters on a day-to-day basis should be first item on the agenda [X, 17 August], whilst Derek Ferguson would prefer the new CEO to take a more backseat outlook compared to the football management staff.

In other Rangers news, the potential departure of Ben Davies could pave the way for the club to sign their target.
