HITC understands that Tottenham Hotspur are keeping a close eye on a former Manchester United academy graduate who is excelling away from Old Trafford.

Under Ange Postecoglou, it has been a frustrating start to the Premier League season for Tottenham Hotspur with the club winning one game out of three.

Newcastle United picked up a smash-and-grab 2-1 victory over Tottenham after Spurs dominated the second half at St James’ Park but Alexander Isak scored late on for the Magpies to give them the win.

 

As well as this, Spurs also dominated against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium but only picked up a point after Jamie Vardy equalised for the Foxes.

HITC understands that Tottenham are keeping close tabs on England’s newest call-up Angel Gomes.

We can also reveal that throughout the summer window, Spurs were keen on a ‘dynamic midfielder’ who can also get forward.

Spurs brought in two midfielders during the summer transfer window with the Lilywhites signing Archie Gray from Leeds United and also promising Swedish teenager Lucas Bergvall.

Long term, Spurs are understood to believe that Gray will be a key player in the middle of the park for the Lilywhites despite his slow start to life in North London.

 

Conor Gallagher was always on Tottenham’s radar but they did not challenge Atletico Madrid for his signature.

 

HITC sources understand that Spurs were ready to wait for the right target coming into 2025 and we understand one of those that they like is Gomes.

 

Angel Gomes set to leave Lille on a free transfer

Since departing United following the expiry of his contract, the English midfielder has done superbly well for Ligue 1 side Lille and earned an England call-up under Lee Carlsley.

Carlsley was keen to praise Gomes last week with the Englishman now in the squad for the September international games.

 

“Angel is probably different to what we would have seen in the past (which) would have been a central midfielder that is more robust,” Carlsley said.

 

“Angel is very technical, controls the game with his skill and technique. Very determined, excellent attitude. Technically and tactically excellent, I think he’s a player that people are going to really be excited to see.”

 

The 24-year-old Lille star, who joined from United in 2020 on a free transfer, is once again out of contract next summer and HITC understands that as it stands he does not plan on signing an extension.

 

HITC can reveal Spurs have been scouting Gomes for a number of years and are ready to complete for his signature, but with Gomes now called up by England, they know they won’t be alone in trying to land his signature.
