Aston Villa have six days left to complete their summer transfer business with the window closing on Friday at 11pm.

Monchi has added seven players to Unai Emery’s first-team squad so far this summer, but Lewis Dobbin – the club’s first signing back in June – left on loan for West Brom. Kosta Nedeljkovic, who signed on in January, joined up with the squad in pre-season and made his Premier League debut on the opening weekend of the season at West Ham.

Ian Maatsen joined from Chelsea in a deal worth £37.5m before Samuel-Iling Junior and Enzo Barrenechea both joined from Juventus as Douglas Luiz headed the other way for £42m. Ross Barkley signed on at the start of July before Villa got deals over the line for Jaden Philogene and Amadou Onana.

Moussa Diaby became the second high-profile departure from the Villa squad as he left for Al-Ittihad in a move for £50.5m in July. Emery wanted to sign Joao Felix to fill the creative void left by Diaby, but the Portuguese returned to Chelsea on a permanent basis having had a loan there in the second half of the 2022/23 season.

Of course, I am happy with him. He is a very good player and a very good person. His adaptation in the squad is fantastic at the moment.”

Barrenechea cost Villa only £6.75m as part of the combined deal which saw him and Iling-Junior head to Villa and Douglas Luiz to Juventus for £42m. He spent last season on loan at Frosinone in Serie A, where he made 36 appearances under Eusebio Di Francesco. Barrenechea joined Juventus in January 2020 from Sion, the Swiss club which signed him from Newell’s Old Boys in Argentina as a teenager.
