Mikael Lustig is convinced Celtic are set to savour home comforts again in the Champions League.

But the Swede feels his old club must also perform on their travels in the pursuit of progression within the top bracket. And he says the elite-level experiences banked by boss Brendan Rodgers can make that happen. Lustig enjoyed epic Parkhead nights during his spell in Glasgow.

The defender was in the team that took the scalp of Barcelona in 2012 as Neil Lennon’s side charged to the last 16 of the competition. But Lustig was also in place as the times got tougher. After helping Celtic to defeat Ajax the year after the Barca triumph, it would be over 10 years before the club would win another Champions League group-stage game on their home patch.

It was Rodgers who ended the drought last term with the win over Feyenoord and his former right-back believes that will be built upon. Starting against Slovan Bratislava on Wednesday week, Celtic also face RB Leipzig, Club Brugge and Young Boys in the East End.

Lustig eyes that quartet of key missions and sees potential success in the lot. The away trips are tougher with encounters against last season’s finalists Borussia Dortmund, Europa League winners Atalanta, Dinamo Zagreb and Aston Villa.

But Lustig is also hoping for positive outcomes through those trips to further show progression for the club on the continent. He explained: “Every game at Celtic Park, I fancy a win. I fancy points.

“So it is up to them to show now that they can also play good football away from home as well. If we can do that, we have good chances. I think the way Brendan wants to play his football, it shouldn’t be that different [home to away].

“Everyone knows it is something special to play under those lights on a European night at Celtic Park. But, obviously, you can’t just perform at home. You need to do it away as well. So I think it is time now for Celtic to show that they can compete in the best tournament.”

Lustig, of course, goes back to the beginning of Rodgers’ Champions League chapters at Celtic, scoring the first-ever goal during the home qualifying tie with Lincoln Red Imps. The Swede subsequently played for the manager in both of his group-stage bids during his opening adventures with the club in his opening spell at the helm.

Rodgers had another half-dozen matches last season upon his return and has additional information gathered and experiences gained during Champions League excursions with Liverpool before heading to Glasgow.

Mikael Lustig in action for Celtic in Champions League against Bayern Munich

Lustig says that all feeds into the mix of potential improvement and relative success in the weeks ahead. He stated: “Yes, hopefully so. You learn a lot from being in the Champions League and you need to be there a lot to learn a lot. So I think he’s more experienced in it now and has a really good squad. The start of the season has been brilliant and, when I look at the teams they are going to play, I fancy a win in a lot of games.”

Celtic have started the season superbly with five-straight victories in the domestic competition. Rodgers’ team have cracked 15 goals at an average of three per game and conceded just the one having hit the ground running. Lustig knows it’ll be a different test at Europe’s top table, but believes they look a side capable as he said: “Yes. I think they can do both parts of the game.

“They can be solid in the defence and can be really good on the ball as well. Of course, I know it is different to play in the Champions League compared to when playing in the Scottish matches. I’m not going to say that every game is easy because it is not, but it feels something extra special when you go to Europe, like this is a game where you need to win. So I hope the players will look at each other and know they are good.”

Lustig, who is now doing academy coaching in Sweden, maintains close links with the Celtic and played amongst pals for the Legends team in their weekend penalty shootout win over Manchester United at Old Trafford. He’s still in touch with old colleagues who remain current stars and says a couple of home-grown heroes remain key to the set-up.

Lustig explained: “If you take Jamesy [Forrest], I spoke with him a lot. He probably felt like his Celtic career might have been coming to an end. But it’s football, it is crazy. He wasn’t involved in the squads for a while and might have gone away. But suddenly you start playing again.

“The way he started this pre-season, he was just flying and I think it is really important to have those sort of players in the group who have been there a while, such as Jamesy and Callum [McGregor].

“When I came into Celtic, I felt we had a lot of those boys. Maybe we don’t have so many now, so you look even more to Cal and Jamesy. The Scottish players are really important and they just look better and better every year.”
