missed out on a loan move for Southampton winger Sam Edozie on transfer deadline day after the Saints wanted a £1 million fee on top of his £30,000-a-week wages, according to the Sun.

The Athletic journalist Jacob Tanswell reported late on Friday night that Rangers had agreed a loan deal to sign the 21-year-old after the Scottish Premiership club were notified of his availability, with Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano earlier reporting of advanced talks between both parties.

Edozie had interest from several clubs in the English Championship and others in the United Kingdom, but Rangers were the one to agree terms.

While completing a move for him had appeared uncertain before the deadline due to the time constraint, it has emerged that the finances involved were the major reason Edozie did not move to the Ibrox club.

Paying his wages and also parting with a £1m loan fee proved too much for Rangers, and they will now look to make further recruitment in January in their bid to stop Celtic this term.

They may have missed out on the Southampton star and a huge opportunity to further bolster their ranks, but the Bears ended the transfer window with the signing of Dutch defender Neraysho Kasanwirjo on loan from Feyenoord, while they snapped up Albania international attacking midfielder Nadim Barjami from Sassuolo on a four-year deal in a move worth up to £3.5m.

Rangers ended up adding the aforementioned duo, Jefte, Oscar Cortes, Clinton Nsiala, Connor Barron, Liam Kelly, Hamza Igamane, Robin Propper and Vaclav Cerny to their squad this summer, while the loan move for Mohamed Diomande was made permanent, and their fans will hope enough was done in the market to beat the Hoops later today and more importantly in the title race.
