Ray Parlour moots Everton ‘panic’ with Dominic Calvert-Lewin sale on the cards

Ray Parlour moots Everton ‘panic’ with Dominic Calvert-Lewin sale on the cards.

Everton will be in a state of panic over the future of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, according to Ray Parlour.

The former Arsenal and England midfielder, speaking live on talkSPORT Breakfast [23 August], claimed that with just a year remaining on Calvert-Lewin’s contract, the club must act now to avoid the “disaster” of losing him on a free transfer, with the striker having been linked with an exit throughout the window.

Parlour notes Brentford and Ivan Toney are in a similar stand-off, and that clubs must sell when only 12 months remain if a new contract cannot be agreed.

“Well the problem is, he’s only got a year left on his contract. A lot of clubs now they panic, they really do because they can’t afford to have a player walk out on a free transfer, it’s the same with Ivan Toney at the moment,” Parlour told Natalie Sawyer on Friday morning.

“If you can get £40-50million for a player, as a club you’ve got to take it as a business model, you can’t just let him play next season, if he does get injured next season then it’s an absolute disaster.

“If he can stay fit and score goals then no problem, but then his contract’s up and he walks away on a free transfer so that’s the problem clubs have got now.”

Everton and Dominic Calvert-Lewin

The general assessment is that following the departure of Amadou Onana to Aston Villa, Calvert-Lewin is the next likeliest to leave Everton.

This is despite the Jarrad Branthwaite saga with Manchester United, as the Toffees hold more power over the contractual status of the young defender, but Calvert-Lewin is a player they may have to sacrifice.

A move to Newcastle United in late June was very close before breaking down, and the 27-year-old started the dismal season opener at Goodison Park against Brighton.

An England international at prime age will always garner interest, but there are question marks over his injury record.

It would not be difficult for Sean Dyche’s men to recoup a bit-part sum on their number nine, who is now into his ninth season at the club, but getting the right price for him may prove tricky.

In other Everton news, Sam Allardyce has warned Dyche over this player.
