Shades of Ben Davies as Celtic consider move for £5m international Rangers target

Rangers were supposed to have gotten one over on Celtic with the signing of Ben Davies.

The former Preston North End captain once looked destined for the Celtic Park changing room when Neil Lennon launched a bid back in January 2021.

Sorry, We Need To Talk About Fabrizio Romano

The left-sided defender was making quite a name for himself in the English Championship and Parkhead bosses wanted him in the door in Glasgow’s east end.

But with Liverpool eventually ‘gazumping’ our Old Firm rivals, Ben Davies moved to Anfield instead and it’s Merseyside he stayed, without kicking a competitive ball, until the summer of 2022.

Rangers then signed a £4m deal to finally bring Davies to Glasgow and the move was heralded as getting one over on our Glasgow rivals.

But two years on, Ben Davies is pound-for-pound one of the Ibrox club’s worst signings of the modern era.

Now, Gers fans will be hoping history repeats itself as Celtic set their eyes on a high-profile former Rangers target.

Celtic linked to transfer of one-time Rangers target

Last summer Rangers were actually expected to try and shift Ben Davies out of the club.

But a failure to move the highly-paid defender on impacted the club’s transfers plans, with several left-sided defenders on Michael Beale’s radar in an ill-fated summer of change.

Amongst the most high-profile was then Arsenal defender Auston Trusty, a USA international who was struggling to break into the team at the Emirates.

Whilst Sheffield United would come along and ‘gazump’ Rangers in a £5m deal, now it appears Celtic are turning their transfer attentions towards the 26-year-old centre-back.

With the Blades relegated from the Premier League last season, the Scottish Sun are claiming that the Parkhead side are considering a move for Trusty.

Mentioning those Rangers links last summer, the report suggests the Parkhead side could negotiate some kind of swap deal involving winger Mikey Johnston.

Can Auston Trusty be Celtic’s Ben Davies?

When it comes to Rangers and Celtic both being linked to the same player, even if the links appear at different times, there’s a standard rule which applies.

If he’s associated with your team, he’s very good, if he’s associated with the other, he’s definitely not.

But when it comes to Ben Davies, any Rangers chuckles about Celtic missing out on the defender in 2021 have been replaced by groans from within the Ibrox faithful.

The high-earning centre-back is one of several who haven’t contributed anywhere near enough in a Rangers shirt.

Whilst Rangers and Celtic have both spent money in recent seasons, it’s not always been used wisely.

Players struggle to adapt to Scotland, the nature of the Scottish footballing landscape means higher wages are often used to lure average players, and sometimes they’re just not cut out for this level of club or the pressure that comes with it.

With the jury very much out on Ben Davies at Rangers, Auston Trusty will have everything to prove in Scotland if he moves to Celtic.

Those links to Rangers just add an extra dimension.
