Manager admits his club want £2.5m Rangers ace with exit likely alongside Ianis Hagi

With Rangers needing to sell before they can buy in the final week of the window, this may be music to the ears of supporters hoping for a few more signings.

While offers are not exactly flooding in for Todd Cantwell and Rapid Bucharest confirming that a potential homecoming for Ianis Hagi is far from ‘imminent’, Rangers at least do have a club that may be willing to take Rabbi Matondo of their hands.

A £2.5 million signing from German underachievers Schalke back in 2022, the jet-heeled Welshman has been in and out of the Gers side since the appointment of Philippe Clement.

Matondo has featured in four of the club’s five fixtures so far this term. Only once has he been included in Clement’s starting XI, however, though Matondo did stake his claim for a more regular role with a lively first half in that League Cup victory over St Johnstone.

That’s if Matondo is not a Blackburn Rovers player before September arrives, of course.

Rangers could sell Rabbi Matondo to Blackburn Rovers

According to the Daily Mail, the one-time Manchester City starlet is ‘destined’ for Ewood Park. Blackburn have emerged as the club in pole position with Leeds United turning to alternatives, including Almeria’s Largie Ramazani.

And, when pressed on those Matondo links for the first time, Rovers boss John Eustace confirmed that the Liverpool-born 23-year-old is indeed a player on the Championship club’s radar.

“I think they are on the list along with 60 other players that the recruitment team have been looking at. They are, yes,” Eustace told The Lancashire Telegraph before mirroring Rapid chief Victor Angelescu by insisting that a deal is not yet close to being completed.

“There is nothing imminent. I wouldn’t expect anything before the weekend.”

Eustace is, however, convinced that a Blackburn side who have made serious errors in the market of late are on the right track when it comes to incomings.

Abu Kamara and Tiago Gouveia on the Ibrox radar

“I am confident we’ll get what we need,” adds the former Birmingham City boss, briefly linked with Rangers before Clement took Mick Beale’s place. “We’ve had our recruitment meetings and we have targets that I’d like to bring in and the club want to bring in.

“It’s about the right balance and making sure everyone is on the same page. We have eight days left to get the right players in.

“It could (go down to the wire). It’s been no different to the last eight or nine weeks, we have targets that the club want. It’s important that we make the right signings and get the right characters in. We have a good group of players now. It’s important to add more to the group.”

Matondo has just two years left on his contract.

A return to English football would leave Rangers even shorter than they currently are on the left-hand flank, however, with the right-footed Scott Wright and full-back Jefte forced to fill in recently.

Last season’s Scottish Premiership runners-up have been linked with Fiorentina’s Josip Brekalo and Benfica’s £7 million-rated Portugal Under 21 ace Tiago Gouveia this week.

Abu Kamara of Norwich City is a £2 million target too after handing in a transfer request at Carrow Road.
