Newcastle United ‘hold talks’ with new centre-back target as £30m deal agreed

Newcastle United are exploring other centre-back options in case they are unable to agree a fee for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

A possible swoop for Guehi was plunged into doubt on Tuesday night after The Athletic’s David Ornstein broke the news that Fulham had reached an agreement in principle with Palace to sign Joachim Anderson for £30million including add-ons.

Eagles chairman Steve Parish admitted last week “I can’t imagine a situation where we would lose both of our centre-halves.” Newcastle have also submitted four bids for Guehi – the latest understood to be worth £65m including add-ons – but have so far failed to reach an agreement.

Although the Anderson’s deal threatens to complicate matters, the door hasn’t yet been closed on Guehi. However, United’s search for alternatives has intensified.

United boss Eddie Howe warned Palace over the weekend that the club aren’t afraid to walk away from transfers they feel command “silly money”.

Howe said on Friday: “There’s two ways to look at that. If you believe in the deal and player, and it’s still within your financial structure then yes, 100%. But there are times where you go ‘no that’s too much’, and we’ve done that plenty of times in the past two-and-half-years.

“Sometimes you wouldn’t find out about that and you’ll have to switch targets. I’ve given you answer on both really because it depends on the deal and what money you have to spend for that to happen”.

And since then, Howe’s side have been linked with the likes of Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah, Liverpool’s Joe Gomez and AC Milan’s Malick Thiaw – but two new names have been reported.

As per Ornstein, Newcastle have held talks with Bayer Leverkusen regarding their Bundesliga-winning centre-back Edmond Tapsoba, while an interest is also held in Chelsea’s Axel Disasi.

Newcastle have nine days left before the summer transfer window shuts. So far they have signed goalkeeper John Ruddy and Odysseas Vlachodimos, Will Osula from Sheffield United for £10m, Lloyd Kelly on a free transfer from AFC Bournemouth and Lewis Hall after his loan from Chelsea was made permanent for an initial £28m.
