- Former Celtic goalie Pat Bonner has said that he was “surprised” by a particular aspect of Brendan Rodgers’ team for the Hibs Cup game, despite it remaining unchanged apart from the injured Kyogo.
Young Finnish goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo didn’t make his Celtic debut in their League Cup match against Hibs on Sunday, despite some expecting Rodgers to give the summer signing his Celtic debut.

Despite Celtic’s 3-1 victory securing their place in the quarter-finals, Bonner was keen to see Sinisalo, who is seen as a potential future mainstay for the club and expected top take over the number 1 jersey after Schmeichel leaves.
Brendan Rodgers chose to continue with Kasper Schmeichel in goal, which Bonner speculated was to allow Schmeichel more time to integrate and develop rapport with his defenders.
The former Celtic goalkeeper said on BBC Radio Scotland: “I was surprised, actually, that he didn’t play the goalkeeper, Sinisalo, the young man that he brought in.
“Scott Bain, what a good position to be third choice at Celtic. When’s he going to play, Scott Bain? When is he going to get a game now that’s going to be the question.
“I think, probably, he wants Kasper Schmeichel just to blend into the team, to get a bit of focus on and get a relationship built up with his defenders and over the next period and maybe ask why he hasn’t made a change.
“But I would have liked to have seen the other young goalkeeper, just to see if he has got the qualities, the confidence that he will be the future Celtic goalkeeper in the next couple of years.
“It would be lovely to see the young man come in and do something.”
In fairness, this match probably came too soon to drop Schmeichel. He’s still settling in with the backline in front of him and still learning about them. Changing that now could be more disruptive than need be, especially with some big games on the horizon.
