Crystal Palace offer fresh Marc Guehi update as £65m Newcastle United question asked

Crystal Palace offer fresh Marc Guehi update as £65m Newcastle United question asked

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner is keeping his cool over Marc Guehi’s future after Newcastle United launched a fourth bid for the defender’s services.

The Magpies have upped their offer to around £65m, with negotiations taking place around the structure of a deal and potential add-ons. Palace are considering the latest proposal, days after owner Steve Parish admitted it would take ‘superstar money’ to lure Guehi from Selhurst Park.

Palace are preparing for their Premier League opener with Brentford on Sunday, with Guehi in line to both feature and captain his team as it stands. Quizzed over whether £65m was enough to force his side into selling, Glasner insisted that was a question for Parish, rather than him.

Yes, Marc trained today with us,” the Palace boss replied. “We talked together. I have no other information. I have to look at my bank account and see if something came in. It doesn’t look like it. We have planned with Marc.

“He’s our player and our captain. I can’t tell you anything else. I don’t know how the chairman defines superstar money. It’s a question you have to ask to the chairman.”

Newcastle’s pursuit of Guehi has been complicated somewhat by Fulham’s pursuit of the 24-year-old’s defensive partner Joachim Andersen. Palace are demanding £40m for the Dane but won’t be keen on losing both their starting centre-backs this close to the end of the summer window.

Quizzed on the Andersen aspect, Glasner added: “There were many rumours about players. You asked me about availability – all players are available.

“I’m very close with all the players – we are talking almost every day. As long as nobody tells me: ‘Gaffer, I will leave.’ Or if the club tells me a player will leave, we work with them every day and prepare the team to be competitive for a Premier League game. At the moment, every single player will play at Brentford.”

Eddie Howe, unsurprisingly, refused to be drawn on the Guehi interest on Friday but did admit Newcastle would have no problem walking away from a deal if a reasonable price could not be agreed. Many have called on the north east outfit to seek an alternative after recent rejections but the club’s hierarchy remain confident a deal can be agreed.

Guehi this week insisted he was fully focused on Palace but has made no secret of his affection for Newcastle in the past. The England international is keen on a move to Tyneside and would become Newcastle’s record signing should a deal materialise.

Enough, for God’s sake. Forget about him until his contract runs out and he’s free to walk.

Reminds me of the good old days when we bought players for big money and they didn’t live up to expectations, why is no one else wanting to buy him? I wish we would look elsewhere and be done with it. Palace is taking the micky
