Todd Golden to UNC is something for Florida fans to keep an eye on
It looks like North Carolina is moving one step closer to breaking ties when Hubert Davis and that means the Todd Golden-to-Tar Heels chatter is going to reach a fever. So, if North Carolina makes a move, could Golden be on the short list?
Golden, who has already won a championship at Florida and has the Gators as a No. 1 seed in the South Region this year, likely isn’t going anywhere. He’s happy in Gainesville. He’s already won a title and he received a contract extension in the offseason. More importantly he knows he will get what he needs to succeed at Florida.
If UNC moves off of Hubert Davis…
You have to call Jay Wright & Danny Hurley, but both will say no.
T. J. Otzelberger & Nate Oats are 2 realistic names.
I’d also call Mark Few. Would he finally leave Gonzaga for a bigger job to win it all?
UNC fans are dreaming if they think Todd Golden will leave Florida
There’s a reason why North Carolina feels like it can just hire any coach from a top ten program. It has happened once before. Roy Williams had built a consistent winner at Kansas and led the Jayhawks to the Final Four on four different occasions. But he left Kansas to go to North Carolina, where he won three championships and solidified his Hall of Fame career.
But Williams had major ties to North Carolina. He was an assistant to Dean Smith and it was his dream job. Golden isn’t part of the “Carolina family” and he doesn’t have any reason to leave a program he has built to championship status and head to a program that is still living off of past glory and in a conference that’s lost a ton of prestige.
The North Carolina job is still a great one. The Tar Heel brand is still extremely strong. It’s going to be an amazing opportunity for the right coach. But Golden is already the right coach at a strong brand in a conference that has established itself as the most dominant in college sports. He’s won big at Florida, and he’ll continue to win big there.
